Holographic displays are used where high impact 3D is essential to bring potential customers to a show stand, be the centre-piece for a corporate head office or to launch a new product. The maximum size available is 2m X 1m (landscape) and can be animated, 3D or both. Holographic displays can be one, two or three colour. The three colour version can simulate full colour from a given angle. Computer screen images cannot do justice to the visual impact of a large format holographic display. Lighting a hologram simply requires a single halogen spot-light from about 2m behind the image. Alternatively the hologram can be illuminated from a spot light on the ground which is reflected off a mirror above the hologram. A typical large format display hologram will start in the region of £10,000 ($15,000 US). A complex, multi image installation can cost as much as £100,000 ($150,000 US).
Large
format holographic displays are the ultimate media for portraying the
third dimension. They can have more depth than lenticular photographs
and work by a completely different process. Spatial Imaging is one of
only very few companies in the world to have a 10J pulse laser capable
of life-like, large format holographic displays of people and products.
To achieve the maximum depth in a hologram, a laser can be used as the light source. An example of this technique was installed in a restaurant in Tokyo in June 2003. Three holograms each lit with their own laser project holographic fish into a waterfall, giving the illusion that the fish are floating in the water. With the advent of relatively low cost and reliable solid state lasers, laser lit holograms are finally a commercially viable solution for the ultimate 3D display. With this technique, many feet of projection is possible - far more than any other technique available.
